After 23 years and over 5000 charters, I have learned a few things about operating a successful charter business.
I have learned that if you are not honest about the fishing or sea conditions, your customers will figure out that you are more interested in the money for that one trip than you were in having them as regular clients.
I have learned that regular clients are the key to being successful.
I have learned that on family trips, it is all about the kids. If you take the time to teach them how to enjoy fishing, you will have repeat customers for years.
I have learned that I can say almost anything to almost anyone as long as I have a smile on my face.
I have learned that guaranteeing fish is easy (it only takes one), that what people want is guaranteed effort.
I have learned that it's better to run from bad weather 5 minutes too soon, than 5 minutes too late.
I have learned that I don't enjoy getting beat up in rough seas anymore than you do.
I have learned that while being a charter captain isn't always everything people make it out to be. I am still one of the luckiest guys around, to work for myself, live in paradise, and do something that I have loved to do since I was a kid.
